Introduction to Momento

What is Momento?

Momento is an innovative service that allows you to transform your photos into professionally printed, personalised coffee-table books, diaries, calendars and greeting cards. All our products are handcrafted to the same premium quality as those you can buy in a bookstore but they’re filled with your own photos.

Whether you're a beginner or a design professional, creating a Momento product is fast, easy and non-technical with Momento’s software. You design it, submit the finished file to us, then we print and manufacture it in our state-of-the-art production facility in Sydney before delivering it to your door.

Our Momento software is simple but powerful. It can automatically create a layout for you, or if you're feeling creative you can design the contents of each page yourself – or a combination of both. The choice is yours!

What is a Momento Project?

We use the term project to describe any product you can design by using the Momento software, for example, a photobook, a diary, a calendar or a card. You’ll notice that we use the term project in the Momento software too.

What is the Momento Process?

Using Momento is as simple as 1, 2, 3:

  1. Download the software
  2. Design your project
  3. Upload your file & order

For more details on this process please click here.

Photobooks

What does a Momento photobook look like?

Momento photobooks are stitched and hand-bound hardcover books that look just like a professional book you’d find in a retail store but they’re filled with your own photos. Each book can look different as you select from 9 sizes, 30+ cover materials and a number of finishing options including a decorative stamp or a dust-jacket to wrap around the hardcover. Our photobooks can have a minimum of 10 printed pages (5 sheets) or a maximum of 200 pages (100 sheets) with up to 24 photos per page.  Read below and see the Photobooks product page for more details.

What is a dust-jacket?

The dust-jacket is an optional extra you can add to your photobook. It is a cover sleeve that can wrap around the hardcover for decorative and protective purposes. Dust-jackets are printed on 270gsm paper stock and finished with your choice of matte or gloss laminate.

What is a designer embossing?

We have created a series of beautifully designed images that can be stamped on to the centre of a hardcover photobook or diary, in gold, silver or clear foil. The designer emboss adds an extra touch of class to your product, giving it a truly professional finish. Our current designs include: Baby Boy, Baby Girl, Baby Feet, ABC blocks, Our Wedding Day, Hearts, Flowers and a classic Pattern, but visit the Photobooks product page for more details. Note: Designer embossing is not available for dust-jackets and some cover materials.

Preparing Content, Files & Formats

What kind of photos can I use in Momento software?
  • Digital photos on your computer
  • Digital photos from your digital camera, a CD/DVD or USB Stick
  • Digital photos from a website (such as Flickr)
  • Regular printed photographs (scanned to digital images)
  • Slides or negatives (scanned to digital images)

What format do my digital photos need to be to use in the software?

Only JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png) or TIFF (.tif) files can be used in the Momento software. Note: If you are familiar with colour spaces, we recommend you use Adobe RGB as CMYK colour space is not supported.

Where should I file the photos I want to use in my Project?

To keep things organised, we suggest you keep all the files you want to use in your project in a single folder or sub-folders, preferably the My Pictures or My Documents folder on your computer.

Copy all your files to your hard disk before starting a Project

All the files you want to use in a project need to be copied to a folder on your computer's hard disk before starting your project. The software will not work efficiently, and you may have problems re-opening project files if your photo files are kept on a CD or any other external device.

What kind of file format is my Momento Project file?

There are actually four file formats associated with the Momento software, but you will mainly deal with the MBK and MBF files.

  1. MBK or Working file: the file you create and open in the software. It has a .MBK at the end of the filename i.e. Birthday.mbk
  2. MBF or Master file: the file created when you click the Export button, and you send to Momento for printing i.e. Birthday MASTER.mbf
  3. PDF or Preview file: a file created during the Export process, for you to proof your design before printing i.e. Birthday PREVIEW.pdf
  4. BAK or Backup file: only required if there are issues with your MBK, please contact Momento if this is the case.

Note: See more details in the Software Help.

Help! I can’t find my Project file

If you can’t find your project or photo files at anytime, you can always do a quick search using the Windows Explorer search tool:

  • Go to the Windows Start Menu accessible at the bottom left of your computer screen
  • Select Search
  • Select All Files and Folders
  • Select All or Part of File Name
  • Type MBK  to find your missing project file or the filename to find your missing photo file
  • The location of your file will appear in a list
  • Right click to open the Containing Folder and access your file

Note: If you still can’t find you file, please check that it is not stored on an external device

Help! The software can’t locate my photo files

This happens when the photos or the book file have been moved from the folder they were stored in when you added them to your project, or if they have been stored on an external hard drive. Because you have moved the files the software can no longer find them or load them in to the software. The software will open a Browse Box for you to search and select the folder the images are now saved in. You will only need to find one image for each folder that you have moved and the software will automatically locate the rest. To avoid this issue you must copy all your photo files off CDs, DVDs, USB memory sticks and external hard drives or before you start your project.

Getting photos off your digital camera

You can download photos from your camera to your computer using the camera’s software or Windows Explorer. To transfer via Windows Explorer:

  • Connect your camera to your computer with the appropriate lead
  • A window will automatically open and ask what you want to do next
  • Choose Open Folder to view files using Window Explorer
  • Another window will automatically open
  • Select and copy the files to your Project folder on your hard disk
  • Before detaching the lead, click the Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device icon

Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device icon

What quality setting should I use on my digital camera?

For best results we suggest you set your camera's quality or resolution setting to 3 megapixels minimum and Fine or Super Fine, instead of Standard or Large.  Choose the largest setting available.

Getting photos from your online photo sharing service

If you use an online photo sharing service like Flickr or Picasa Web Albums you can download your own photos by:

  • Locating the largest size or highest resolution version of the photo
  • Right-click on the photo
  • Select Save Picture As
  • Browse and select your Project folder on your hard disk to save the photos to

Note: All files need to be copied to your hard disk before starting your project

How do I scan printed photographs, negatives and slides?

If you want to use an image from a printed photograph, a slide, negative or transparency you need to scan it to turn it in to a digital image and save it your computer.  We suggest that before scanning any photo, you wipe the scanner's glass and the photo with a lint free cloth to remove excess dust.
For the best results use these scanner settings:

  • File size: 2000 x 1500 pixels minimum
  • Dots per inch: 300 DPI or greater if you want to enlarge a photo or make it fill the whole page
  • File format: Save the file as a JPG with a minimum quality setting of 8
  • Colour space: Adobe RGB colour space (if this is option is available with your scanner)

Note: Slides, negatives and transparencies require a special scanner with a dedicated slide holder.

Can I get a professional to do the scanning for me?

Yes.  If you don't have a scanner or you're not comfortable with the process of scanning photographs, visit the Momento Service Directory to search and view scanning services in your area.

Enhancing scanned photos

Adobe Photoshop Elements is an easy-to-use graphics software that you can use to enhance your scans before using them in the Momento software. Here are some quick tips for improving scans:

  • Use the Despeckle or Dust & Scratches tools in the Filter > Noise menu to remove dust visible in the scan
  • Use the Brightness/Contrast tool in the Enhance menu to lighten or darken your image
  • Use the Red Eye Brush tool in the Tools bar to remove red eyes

There are many other free graphics software packages to enhance your images including Google Picasa.

Momento Content

What is Momento content?

In addition to your own photos, Momento has created hundreds of professionally designed decorative graphics you can add to enhance your design such as background colours, frames, borders, letters and embellishments. We have also created 40+ complete book designs with themed artwork that you can easily add your photos too. We call these Quickbooks.

Where do I find all the Momento content?

Go to the Updater Panel to browse nearly 50 packages of pre-designed frames, backgrounds, templates and embellishments. Each package has a descriptive name such as Sloppy Borders, Bright Solid Backgrounds, Templates 1 and Baby Girl. Select your preferred package(s) and click the Install Now button to start the download. When the download is complete the content will appear in the appropriate Content Panel.

What happens to the Momento content after I download it?

All the Momento content is accessible from the Content Panel and its interchangeable Backgrounds, Frames, Embellishments and Layouts panels. You will find the Themed Quickbooks in the Layouts Panel and individual page decorations in the Embellishments Panel.  Please visit the Software Help section for more details.

Designing a Project

Can Momento design my project for me?

Momento does not have a design service but we do have a Service Directory listing professionals who can assist you with design, scanning, retouching and other services, at an additional charge. Their charges will vary depending on your requirements.  Please visit Software Help for all the information you need to know about designing your project.

How can I find someone to do the design for me?

Visit the Momento Service Directory to find a list of professionals who can help with your design.

How many photos can I include on a page?

We limit the number of photos per page to 24 photos to ensure that the Momento software runs efficiently.

Can I change the shape of my project midway through design?

No. You can not change a project from a Square to Landscape orientation midway through your design. In order to change the shape of your project you need to start a new project.

Can I change the size of my project midway through design?

Yes. You can change the size your project by following these steps:

  • Go to the Page Menu at the top of the screen
  • Select Size
  • Select the size you wish to use (Grand, Regular, Small)

Note: You will need to re-export this file for this to create a new MBF in your preferred size.

Can I join two Projects together?

No. Currently there is no way to convert two separate projects in to a single project, but we’ll keep working on it!

Does the first page of my design appear on the left or right page of my photobook?

The first page you design in the Momento software will print on to the first right hand page in your photobook or diary. To its left will be a blank white page. The first double page spread will show Page 2 on the left and Page 3 on the right.

Can I work on a Project with someone working on another computer?

Yes, but it can be bit tricky and time-consuming and only one of you will be able to work on this file at a time! The easiest way is to have them send you their photos and text so you can add them to the project. Alternatively you will need to copy the project file and all related photo files to your friend’s computer using exactly the same folders and file structure you used on your computer, and vice versa if they send it back to you for editing. You can preview each other's work by emailing the PDF Preview or by using the Send To Friend tool to view the Online Preview.

Copyright

What content can I include in my design?

You can only include photos, images, text or any other content owned or copyright cleared by you.

How do I know who owns the copyright?

Copyright in any content belongs to the person who took the photograph, the person who created the image or with the publisher who commissioned the artwork. Photographers who have signed a Publishing Agreement may need permission from the client or publishing company to include the photographs in a Momento design.

Does Momento own the copyright in my Momento project?

Momento is a printing service not a publishing company. Momento does not own copyright of any files or their contents that are submitted by our customers.

HP Indigo printers are currently the international benchmark for printing photobooks and other photo products. Momento’s HP Indigo print operator is the most experienced in the country.

How do you ensure premium print quality?

Momento uses high quality digital offset printing rather than traditional photographic printing processes. Digital offset printing combines the best of traditional photographic print processes, traditional offset book printing processes and the versatility of digital technology to provide a high quality print process at an affordable cost. To ensure we maintain the highest quality printing for your masterpieces, we run tests and maintenance checks every few hours, we print a colour swatch with every print, and run every print by our quality assurance team for stringent review.

What do you use for printing dust-jackets?

We print all our covers and dust-jackets on high quality, wide format inkjet printers, on to premium photo satin stock.

Do you use archival paper?

Momento products are digitally printed on to high quality paper stocks that are rated as archival according to standard ISO-9706. The paper manufacturers estimate a lifetime of 105 years. We warrant no responsibility for the longevity of your Momento photobook but recommend you store it in a dry place out of direct or ultraviolet light and avoid bending the cover beyond its natural limits.  We also provide Care Instructions with every order to ensure you enjoy your Momento product for many years to come.

Is the paper environmentally friendly?

Momento uses paper sourced from FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified sources. Please see our Environmental Policy here.

Do you use archival inks?

The inks used are guaranteed not to fade for 50 years when not exposed to harsh or ultra-violet light for extended periods of time.

What will the colours look like in my Momento prints?

Momento takes colour management seriously and we have gone to much effort to ensure our software and workflow processes maximise the colour quality of your prints. Momento does not manually adjust the colours during the printing process, instead, we have included an Auto-Enhance tool in the Momento software that you can adjust the colour of your photos, to brighten and boost colours. Note: This is an automated tool that may not provide the preferred colour result every time it is used so we suggest you review your photo(s) before and after the auto-enhance tool has been used to ensure that you're happy with the result.  Please see Software Help to find out more about the Auto-Enhance tool.

My printed product doesn’t look like it did on my monitor?

The colours in your Momento print may differ to the colours you see on your computer screen if your monitor is not calibrated.  It is common for the colour and contrast settings of a computer monitor to change over time therefore we cannot guarantee that the colour and contrast you see in your Momento file onscreen will be exactly the same as your printed version. This is a common problem for professional photographers and designers. To ensure more accuracy you can calibrate your monitor regularly, and install colour profiles on to your computer that will allow you to accurately soft-proof your file. Colour management is a complex topic, if you'd like to find out more please contact our customer service team.

My book print looks different to the 6 x 4” photograph of the same image?

The colour in your photographic print may differ to your Momento print because photo labs can manually and randomly adjust the colour and contrast settings in your photos during their printing process. This explains how you can get different results from two photo labs or even from the same lab on different days. With a photobook or photo-product that has many photos in it we can not manually adjust every image. Instead, we have included an auto-enhance tool in the software that you can choose to use to make colour adjustments to individual or all photos in your project. Please see Software Help for more details.

Can Momento files be printed elsewhere?

Momento photobooks can only be printed by Momento's professional printers. The Master File you send to Momento is a proprietary file which can only be unlocked by us for printing. A water-marked version of your Master File (the PDF Preview) can however, be printed on your home printer for proofing and editing purposes only.

Does someone check my Momento design before it’s printed?

No. Momento does not check or make any changes to your files. We encourage you to check your PDF Preview carefully, at 100% viewing size, before submitting, as orders cannot be cancelled.

Do you check all the prints?

Yes, to ensure that you receive the highest quality product, our expert staff run every print through a series of quality checks as we manufacture your order. The quality assurance checks include reviewing every page for print issues (scratches and ink imperfections) before it moves through for binding or finishing, and also checking the finished product to ensure that no damage was experienced in the manufacturing process.

Do you edit or proof our files?

No. We do not check the uploaded or printed files for typographical errors, design faults, alignment issues or any other design error. We only check for Momento generated print or manufacturing issues. All the proofing of the file is done by you prior to submitting your file for print.  Please see our Cancellation Policy for more details.
